Have you ever received a beautiful flower bouquet—perhaps for graduation, a birthday, or just because—and noticed it starts wilting by evening? That once-vibrant bloom now looks tired and droopy. At Smile Floral, we believe your flowers deserve better. With just a few simple steps, you can extend the life of your fresh cut flowers and enjoy their beauty a little longer. Here’s how:
As soon as you get your flowers, trim about 1–2 inches off the base at a slight angle. This increases water absorption and helps prevent the stems from sitting flat against the vase.
Bonus: If your bouquet is from Smile Floral, it’s already wrapped with water-soaked cotton at the base—so there’s no rush. You can wait a day or two before transferring it to a vase!
Fill a clean vase with fresh water and submerge the stems. Just make sure the water covers only the stem ends—not too much or the flowers might rot prematurely.
Pour in a quarter cup of soda (like 7-Up or Sprite) into your vase water. The sugar keeps the blooms bright and fresh for longer.
Tip: Use a clear soda for clear vases so it still looks nice.
Avoid placing your bouquet near direct sunlight or heat sources. Warm temperatures can speed up wilting. Instead, display your flowers in a cool, well-ventilated room to keep them fresh and breathing.
Don’t toss that little packet of flower food—it helps! Mix it properly into your vase water. Flower food nourishes your bouquet and prevents bacterial growth.
It’s tempting to refrigerate your bouquet—but don’t. Unlike commercial floral coolers, household fridges often contain fruits that release ethylene gas, which can actually damage your flowers.
Caring for fresh flowers doesn’t have to be complicated. These small gestures go a long way in preserving their charm. Got more tips to share? Drop them in the comments—we’d love to hear from you!
